In this annual contest hosted by EngineerGirl (part of the National Academy of Engineering), participants imagine a common object they’d like to make “smart” using internet-connected computing or AI. Essays must explain how the object would function, benefit users, and address potential problems—including privacy or bias concerns—within grade-level word limits and requirements for optional references. Submissions are evaluated based on engineering insight (50%), perspective (35%), and writing quality (15%)
