Genes in Space

Eligibility:
U.S. residents or citizens in grades 7–12; apply individually or in teams of up to 2 students

Participants design an original DNA‑based experiment that addresses challenges of space exploration, using tools like miniPCR thermal cyclers and cell‑free systems. Finalists receive mentoring from Harvard and MIT scientists, may travel to the ISS Research & Development Conference, and one grand prize team may have their experiment launched to the International Space Station and participate in Space Biology Camp. The contest also awards biotechnology kits to participating schools.
