NOSB is a nationwide academic quiz‑bowl style competition focused on ocean sciences—including biology, chemistry, physics, geology, geography, policy, and technology. Teams compete regionally and winners advance to a three‑day national finals. Alongside buzzer-style and team challenge rounds, finals include career mentoring, field trips, expert briefings, and mock Congressional hearings. Top finishers receive experiential ocean research trips and smaller prizes; participants are eligible for the National Ocean Scholar Program scholarship (up to $1,000)
