YoungArts National Writing Competition

Location:
National competition (U.S.-based; held virtually for applications and submissions; National YoungArts Week in Miami for finalists)

$35 per discipline entered (fee waivers available)
Contest Date:
Opens mid‑July (e.g. July 22, 2025), closes early October (e.g. October 8, 2025 at 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT)
Application Deadlines:
October 8, 2025 at 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT
Eligibility:
Students in grades 10–12 or ages 15–18 as of December 1 of the application year; U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or legally able to receive taxable income in the U.S.; previous award winners who attended National YoungArts Week are ineligible

This is a national competition across six writing genres—creative nonfiction, novel excerpt + synopsis, play or script, poetry, short story, or spoken word—judged by panels of professional artists in a blind process. Finalists earn monetary prizes from $250 to $10,000, are invited to a week‑long, all‑expenses‑paid National YoungArts Week in Miami, and winners with distinction may be nominated for U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts
